One of my colleagues David Keyson used to do a lot of research on haptic feedback about 11 or 12 years ago. Admittedly it was on trackerball UI's but the idea was you could feel your way around the objects displayed, whether you were moving up or down etc. But the algorithms of translating haptic behaviors to the 'actuators' would be still interesting to look at.

My guess is that for your dream MS would be working on it already to extend their "Surface".

I do not know much about airplane simulators, but from what I've read they seem to use a haptic interface. Do you know anything about them?

One of the places where you can go to get these types of design concepts is TAT's mobile user interfaces blog. In particular, go see the mobile user interfaces video on Senseg.

Of course be aware that Immersion is providing haptics, now, for a wide variety of situations. Games with rumble feedback, sense-able touchscreen buttons, interesting medical applications, and so forth.

I've been thinking about haptics for a while. If designers don't get moving quickly in this area, things won't be too pretty in the future. Think of all the user-unfriendly entertainment center remote control devices out there right now! (There are some touch screen controllers out there now, but they are expensive. I'm not sure if they provide haptic feedback.)
